It is based on the physics of the mix: when you combine water and plaster, the final volume is the sum of the water volume and the volume taken up by the plaster grains (gypsum density: 2.58 kg/L). This is more accurate than a simple volume ratio.

How to measure plaster for mold making

What is the right plaster-to-water ratio?
The ratio is expressed in kilograms of plaster per liter of water. Use 1.3 for a fluid, detailed plaster, 1.5 for standard use, and 1.8 for a hard, strong plaster. The higher the ratio, the denser and stronger the plaster. Expressed the other way around, that is a water-to-plaster ratio of about 0.77 down to 0.56.
How much plaster for a pottery or ceramic mold?

The calculation is based on the density of gypsum (calcium sulfate): 2.58 kg/L. It is a physical constant, the same whatever the type of plaster (Plaster of Paris, pottery plaster, etc.). It allows more accurate dosing than a simple volume ratio.
How do I measure the volume of an irregular object?
Dip the object into a graduated container filled with water and note how far the level rises: the difference is its volume. You can also enter that volume directly in the calculator.
How much water for 1 kg of plaster?
At a ratio of 1.5, you need about 0.67 liter of water for 1 kg of plaster (1 ÷ ratio). At 1.3 it's ~0.77 L, and at 1.8 about 0.56 L. The calculator does this automatically for your mold volume.
Can I measure plaster by volume instead of by weight?
